Signworks is Proud to Be Female-Led
Signworks Inc. has been female-owned since 1935.
We are proud of the fact that today, the company that was founded by Dwight and Elizabeth Hatcher is fourth-generation-owned by great granddaughters Gaby Ryan and Mikaela Layson.
Gaby and Mikaela are part of a growing trend of female business owners. In fact, 4 out of every 10 businesses (40%) in the United States are owned by women today. This accounts for more than 11.3 million U.S. companies, employing more 9 million people.
According to the just-released 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, the growth of female-owned businesses surged 58% from 2007-2018, while all businesses increased by only 12%. Total revenue of women-owned groups during that time frame jumped 46% while revenue for all businesses increased 36%.
More specifically, there is a rising trend of females choosing careers in the manufacturing industry. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2016, women totaled approximately 47% of the US Labor Force, but only 29% of the manufacturing workforce. But this number is on the rise. Women are increasingly choosing careers in the manufacturing field.
Some numbers suggest that female-led companies tend to be “small” businesses, while larger companies are predominantly still owned by men. Some would argue that women leaders focus more on building relationships with clients, vendors and employees, while male leaders focus more on business growth and success. At Signworks, we would argue that we have been successful in creating a a business that does both – we have enjoyed steady growth over the decades, while creating a work environment that values our employees and clients.
We would like to think the Hatchers would be proud that Signworks Inc. has remained family-owned over eight decades after it was founded. We think they would be particularly proud that under the strong leadership of great-daughters Gaby and Mikaela, Signworks continues to shine as a leader in the sign industry in Omaha.
