Signworks Restores Iconic Dundee Sign
The Max I. Walker sign at the corner of 50th & Underwood, in the heart of Dundee, is one of Omaha's most iconic signs.
Signworks has been working with the Walker family for generations and together it was time to revitalize the Dundee location.
We had a shared goal of restoring the landmark projecting sign to its former glory while updating the lighting to environmentally friendly LED components where possible.
The sign had undergone changes over the years, so we began with an assessment. Fortunately, because we planned to restore as much of the sign as possible to its original condition, we were allowed to proceed and avoid any new permits.
The real work began with removing the sign and its supports along with transporting it back to our shop for restoration. The sign was gently taken apart to assess what could be repaired and what needed to be replaced. The original oval faces were custom-made with raised lettering. Our painter was able to refresh the painted graphics on the sign faces. The body of the sign was also treated to a fresh coat of red paint. New LED lights were added to the red arrow along with new electrical hardware. Finally, the neon for "one-hour cleaning" was replaced and the background text was hand-painted to return to its original appearance.
After several days of attentive repairs and updates the sign was revitalized, re-installed and is now brightly lighting up Dundee once again.
